The Vote Is On: Here are the nominees in the 2017 Boston Music Awards

Ladies and gentlemen, start your arguments -- the nominations for the 2017 Boston Music Awards are in.

This year's banquet celebrates 30 years of the BMAs, and today's nomination reveal kicks off several weeks of festivities, public voting, and award unveilings that all lead to the winners being announced on stage December 7 at the House of Blues.

Appropriately enough, the nomination ballot is perhaps the BMAs' biggest yet, with a total of 36 categories and more than 100 bands, artists, and music scene hustlers up for awards. Some familiar and deserving names -- PVRIS, Cousin Stizz, Weakened Friends -- dominate the slate, but competition is tougher than ever, as the top-shelf categories have expanded to 10 nominees (Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, New Artist), and the addition of a few new entries (Unsigned Artist, Album Artwork) bring more talents into the mix.

"Boston is a world-class music city," says Boston Music Awards owner Paul Armstrong. "The quality, strength, and diversity of the nominated artists this year speak for themselves. Over the next few months, the team and I look forward to working tirelessly to make the December 7 awards something the Boston music scene can be proud of -- a night that truly showcases and celebrates the talent we call our own."

Voting is 100 percent open to the public, kicks off today at 10 a.m. and will be live until October 30 at 11:59 p.m. The 2017 BMAs ballot was composed of a nomination committee featuring roughly 400 media members, booking agents, producers, radio programmers, DJs, managers, publicists, industry professionals, past winners, and others active in the city's music scene.

For the fifth year in a row, Vanyaland has been nominated for Best Music Blog (yes, we hate being called a "blog," but a nomination is a nomination), and several of our contributors are up for Photographer of the Year (Eddy Leiva, Ben Stas, Matthew Shelter, Cara DiFabio, Greg Gaffney).

The Boston Music Awards are also commemorating 30 years of the BMAs with a new feature, "Boston’s 30 Greatest Artists," where the nomination committee and the general public will be asked for nominees in naming "the 30 greatest Boston artists from the past 30 years." A shortlist will be announced and voting on the 30 finalists will begin on October 2 (we'll just go ahead and endorse Anal Cunt for the top spot).

That same day, voting for Music Photo of the Year and Music Artwork of the Year will also open for public tally. So there's a lot going on.

Check out all the nominees below, and join the BMAs for the official nomination party tonight at Hojoko in the Fenway. Featured PVRIS photo by Eliot Lee Hazel.
