Garbage announce 20th anniversary edition of ‘Version 2.0’

We’ve used up a lot of digital ink on this website detailing how Garbage have skillfully used nostalgia to fuel their second act without ever having to rely solely on it. In recent years, the band has leaned heavenly on their past while also creating some of the best music of their impressive catalog, but now dip back into yesterday for 20th anniversary release of sophomore album Version 2.0.

Version 2:0 is in my opinion the quintessential garbage record,” says Garbage singer Shirley Manson. “We are all very grateful to the millions of people who took it to their hearts at the time it was released and to those who continue to love on it still.”

Released May 11, 1998, the record spawned singles like “Push It”, “I Think I’m Paranoid,” and “Special”, sold more than four million copies around the world, and was nominated for a quartet of Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year. The re-issue is out June 22 Stunvolume/PIAS, and features the whole original album and 10 b-sides, including “Lick The Pavement,” which you can hear below.

Version 2.0 is the sound of a band growing up, evolving, and more than anything, gaining confidence,” says drummer and co-producer Butch Vig. “When we started recording, we made a conscious decision to not re-invent ourselves, but rather take everything we learned from our debut album and filter it through the new digital technology we were grappling with. Sonically, the album has moments of razor sharp clarity and soft beauty. Indeed, it’s possibly our best album.”

Check out some Garbage live dates below, in which they’ll perform the record in full and a handful of the b-sides, and revisit the album in its remastered glory after the jump.
