Studio 52 Spotlight: Vundabar

What Studio 52 Says: After a sweet run in Europe, Vundabar bring their surf rock greatness back to Boston. We were entranced by the band during last year’s Boston Music Awards season during which we wrote about their 2017 album Gawk and thought it was “brimming with fuzzy guitars and haunting melodies set to an upbeat rhythm you can’t help but move to.” In the time since their nomination for Unsigned Artist of the Year, Vundabar have released their newest LP Smell Smoke. Opening with a track that can easily give The Killers a run for their money, Vundabar lays down the groove with ten toe-tapping songs that give merit to their nominations the past three BMAs dating back to 2015. Our favorite jam on the new record is the six-minute outlier “Tar Tongue.” The final two-and-a-half minutes of the track close out with a wavy guitar riff instrumental that drives home the dispiriting nature of the song. The final seconds culminate in a chaotic synth blast that transitions straight into the next song “Tonight I’m Wearing Silk” that picks you back up and gets you off your feet. Before heading to Europe in May, Vundabar spent the majority of March and April playing sold-out shows on a headlining tour with Ratboys throughout the US and Canada. Vundabar are rightfully exploding at the speed of light and spring 2018 just might belong to them. Catch the Boston stop of their run with Hot Snakes tonight (June 8) at Brighton Music Hall in Allston with Meat Wave. — Andrew Maroney, Studio 52
