Vance Joy and Alice Merton live at The Pavilion in Boston

Editor’s Note: We all need a little bit more joy in our lives, and on Friday (June 15), the variety known as Vance Joy brought that action to The Blue Hills Bank Pavilion in Boston. The Australian singer-songwriter, perhaps best known for his 2013 hit “Riptide,” was in town hyping his February sophomore album, Nation of Two. The name of the LP was a fitting one Friday night, Vanyaland’s John Hutchings notes, as couples filled the Pavilion for their own type of date night, one of a relaxed atmosphere and chill vibes down by the water. The age range of the near-capacity crowd was a wide one, and where a certain person fell on the age spectrum was maybe best defined over the course of the evening when Joy covered both Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long” and Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” as a medley into “Riptide.” Hutchings captured visuals of the performance, including a few shots of opener Alice Merton.
