Shay’s in Cambridge honoring the life and music of Scott Hutchison

The world is still coming to terms, in various ways, with the death of Scott Hutchison.

Earlier this week The Cure’s Robert Smith announced that Frightened Rabbits’ scheduled club show as part of Meltdown Festival in London would regroup as a panel discussion titled “Mental Health And The Music Industry,” and various other tributes, fundraisers, and discussions have sprung up since Hutchison took his own life last month.

This Saturday (June 23) at Shays Pub & Wine Bar, the Harvard Square spot is organizing their own public healing and celebration event. Titled “Raise a Pint to Scott — Frightened Rabbits Unite!”, the gathering will feature music from Hutchison’s bands and projects (including solo project Owl John and collaborative group Mastersystem) as well as some spontaneous live acoustic performances.

“To be honest, Shay’s is absolutely the kind of pub Scott talks about in interview and song,” says organizer and Shay’s bartender Mikey Holland. “I’m so fucking happy that it’ll be here. If you’ve never been, I think you’ll also find this place is really magical! …We’re a small place but plenty of room for everyone.”

Shay’s will be offering up some complementary snacks from their food menu as well, and Holland promises the bar will serve up all the Downeast Cider and whisky they can sling.

Here’s more from the Facebook event page:

New England Frightened Rabbits are coming together to raise a few pints in honor of the late Scott Hutchison. They’ll be stories shared, laughter had, whisky drank, a wee bit of misery and tears in the comfort of new and old friends. Music will be played all night from FR/OWL JOHN/Mastersystem as well as a few impromptu musical tributes. Make new friends and celebrate a truly beautiful artist in Cambridge’s finest pub.

Indeed.
