Studio 52 Spotlight: Targus Targus

What Studio 52 Says: Targus Targus are a video game music automaton that bestow toasty hot electro-jams upon the Studio 52 office on the regular — whether we like it or not, because their rehearsal space is directly above our lobby. Originally born out of frontman Dave Holmes’ love for video games, skills with synths, and various other nerd-like attributes, Targus Targus have been somewhat of a snowball rolling down a hill, gaining members over time and eventually settling as a full live band that’s tighter than Richard Simmons’ unitard. These guys never miss a cue, the rhythm section is dead locked together, the drummer’s hi hat technique is next level, and the lead synth lines have you feeling like you’re Fox McCloud ready to blow Andross to bits. It’s no holds barred for their level of abnormality, their social media presence is trippy and confusing (to say the least), and they keep adding more and more elements to their sound to keep listeners enthralled. Pro tip: Expect the unexpected. Spoiler alert: The one you’d suspect the least is set to rip a tasty lead saxophone line in the faces of fans on Tuesday night. Their four albums brandish syncopated synth driven tunes backed by electronic drums and are simply titled v1, v2, v3, and, you guessed it, v4 (we wonder what they’ll call the next one) but their live set is where it’s at; seeing for yourself how these guys translate their prominently electronic albums to a live setting is nothing short of mesmerizing, and frankly, dope af. Go see what we mean this Tuesday night (July 3); they’re kicking off a Boston Hassle event at The Dorchester Art Project, supporting California’s HØUNDS and SUPPLEMENT. — Trevor McSweeney, Studio 52
