This feels like the right time to remind everyone that The Dodos are not extinct. In fact, the San Francisco duo of guitarist Meric Long and percussionist Logan Kroeber are alive and thriving, and will release new album Certainty Waves this October 12 via Polyvinyl Record Co. They’ll also play Thunder Road in Somerville a few weeks later, on November 2.
Long is calling Certainty Waves the band’s “midlife crisis record.” He stepped away from music after The Dodos released Individ in 2015, experiencing both the death of his father and birth of his first child, but found his form this year through synth-based solo project FAN. This new Dodos LP is about recalibrating the past and identifying the present, and is described by Long as such: “Who we thought we were, how mistaken we were, how an interference in the trajectory can flip your understanding of what came before.”
The lead track off Certainty Waves, a guitar-rock ripper called “Forum”, is a poignant declaration of a comeback, and it can be heard below just before the full run of fall Dodos dates, which include a few shows with Palehound.
