‘Detective Pikachu’ Trailer: A fuzzy Ryan Reynolds is on the case

Detective Pikachu

We’ve known about the Detective Pikachu movie for quite some time now — remember back when everybody wanted Danny DeVito to voice the little electrified rodent, and got really disappointed that Ryan Reynolds was ultimately hired for the job? — but we weren’t expecting it to look this… good? We’re big fans of the Nintendo 3DS game, and were glad to hear that they were making the concept into a feature-length film, but we didn’t think they’d lean into the live-action element as far as they wound up going.

Anyways, Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for the live-action Pokémon film on Monday, and boy, does it look odd as hell. And by that, we mean that it looks absolutely delightful, as if someone had gone back in time and hit George Lucas with the right bolt of inspiration to make Howard the Duck into an even greater film than it already is (and yes, we’ll go to bat for that movie any day of the week).

Take a look:

Here’s a synopsis:

The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: A hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Detective Pikachu hits theaters on May 10.
